ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Friday that distortions introduced in the Constitution by former military dictators would soon be done away with.
“The nation will soon hear good news about undoing of amendments made by the past dictators,” the prime minister said during a telephonic conversation with PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif. He also extended birthday greetings to Mr Sharif.
Mr Gilani expressed the hope that in the coming year the PPP and the PML-N would work jointly to steer the country out of the present crisis and strengthen democratic institutions for the sake of prosperity, progress and wellbeing of the masses.
Sources in the PML-N said the party wanted the government to repeal the 17th Amendment soon and implement the Supreme Court’s verdict on National Reconciliation Ordinance.
According to them, Mr Sharif assured the prime minister that his party would not destabilise the government but would press for fulfilment of promises made to the PML-N from time to time, including implementation of the Charter of Democracy.
